Shou sugi ban cladding, deep snow roofs and a stone hearth anchor a series of intimate rooms around a sheltered courtyard.
Kuro Ridge is a winter house designed as three dark gables gathered around a protected snow court. From the road, the lodge appears almost abstract against the birch forest; inside, charred timber gives way to pale oak, woven paper and broad openings toward Mount Yōtei.
The central gable contains a double-height living room anchored by a monolithic stone hearth. A chef’s kitchen and long dining table extend into the courtyard, while a concealed listening room offers a more intimate retreat after skiing. Deep roof lines manage snow and frame the changing forest without compromising privacy.
Six suites occupy the quieter wings, including a primary suite with its own onsen-inspired bath. A ski room, dry sauna, treatment room and heated garage support the practical rhythm of winter, while terraces and a sheltered moss garden make the house equally compelling outside the snow season.
